2018 Adult: Learn to Sail (Centreboard)

STANDARDS

CYC Instructors are trained and certified by the Sail Canada (formerly Canadian Yachting Association). Instructors teach using the Sail Canada curricula which is the standard across Canada. It includes a progression of skills and knowledge both ashore and afloat. The Sail Canada ratio of students to instructors is maintained.

Participants will:

  • Gain a basic knowledge of boat and sailing terminology
  • Learn to tie nautical knots
  • Act as helm while getting underway from, and returning to, a dock, mooring or beach
  • Act as helm while beating (upwind), reaching (across the wind), running (downwind)
  • Learn to tack, gybe, bearing off and heading up using proper sailing commands
  • Stop a boat at a predetermined point by luffing up (as in approaching a mooring)

WHAT STUDENTS NEED

  • Government approved and fitting life jacket (PFD)
  • Change of clothes
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • Sunglasses (with strap to prevent loss)
  • Drinking water in a non-breakable container
  • Clearly label everything and leave valuables at home



Learning Boats - Centreboard — CL14 Class Sailboat or Topper Topaz 

Maximum Class Size — 6 (2 per boat) $295.00 pp + HST

Minimum Class Size — 4

During the course, participants will be offered a complementary Associate Membership to the Cobourg Yacht Club. Upon completion of the course, participants are encouraged to build on their sailing skills as part of the centreboard or keelboat racing fleets.

Adult learn to sail centreboard classes are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings in July and August from 6 to 9pm. The first course starts Monday, July 9 and continues to Wednesday July 25. In August, classes are from Wednesday, August 8 (Monday, Aug 6 is a holiday) through Monday, August 27. There are only six spaces in each course so register early.
