Junior Learn-to-Sail Program

Learning to sail is the start of a lifelong journey that can lead to racing, cruising and instructing others. Our sailing school staff have grown out of the Learn to Sail Program at Cobourg Yacht Club.

The Sailing School, established in 1965 when the club first formed, is open to everyone who wishes to discover the challenge and excitement of sailing. The school offers instruction from Wet Feet (Optimist - Ages 6 -10) through CANSail 1 to CANSail 4 (Age 9 -15). All programs are taught to the Sail Canada standards and all of our instructor staff are Sail Canada certified.

Learn to Sail at the CYC emphasizes:

  • Safety
  • Fun
  • Lifelong learning

2023 Learn To Sail Awards and Celebration

The annual Sailing School Awards and Celebration, held Thursday afternoon, was both a well-attended and truly enjoyable event.  Cupcakes topped with a large dob of club-coloured icing left festive smudges of blue on happy fingers and faces (including the Director’s)—it was a perfect touch for the celebration, and many thanks must go to Sherry Summersides for making it all happen.

Every student received a medallion, presented with Olympic splendour by their instructors. Instructors then presented plaques and trophies for specific achievement and recognition:

Most Improved

Wetfeet David Miranda

CS 1Gabriel Dew

CS 2Ella Amir

CS 3Lexi VandenBosch

Nutty Man Award

Ammar Al-Ali

Bell Shaw Award

Oliver Brans

Special mention, and thanks, cannot be denied to our instructors for their great work this season:  Abby Grundy (Head Instructor), Danika Burt, Aneta Kubik—and our indefatigable summer volunteer, Hugo.  They are an excellent group and have been a pleasure to work with all summer!
