LEARN-TO-SAIL PROGRAM Learning to sail is the start of a lifelong journey that can lead to racing, cruising, and instructing others. Our sailing school staff have grown out of the Learn to Sail Program at Cobourg Yacht Club (CYC). The Sailing School, established in 1965, is open to everyone who wishes to discover the challenge and excitement of sailing. The school offers instruction from Wet Feet (Optimist - Ages 8 -10) and CANSail 1 through CANSail 4 (Age 9 -16). All programs are taught to the Sail Canada standards and all of our instructor staff are Sail Canada certified. Learn to Sail at the CYC emphasizes: Safety, Fun, Lifelong learning. REGISTER HERE! Instructors teach using the CANSail curriculum, which is the standard across Canada. It includes a progression of skills and knowledge both ashore and afloat. The Sail Canada ratio of students to instructors is maintained. WHAT STUDENTS NEED Government approved and proper fitting life Personal Floatation Device (PFD), Change of clothes, Sunscreen and a hat, Sunglasses (with strap to prevent loss), Drinking water in a non-breakable container, Lunches and snacks (no nut products). Clearly label everything and leave valuables at home. REGISTRATION IS EASY AND IMMEDIATE! If you have any questions, please contact the CYC by email at sailingschool@cobourgyachtclub.ca ADULT SAILING CLASSES CYC continues to offer adult sailing instruction this summer with our newly acquired fleet of CL 16 dinghies. Classes will cover CANSail 1 and CANSail 2 curricula, taught by Sail Canada certified instructors. The adult program has been designed to “learn at your own pace.” Courses will be in two-week sessions throughout the summer (given adequate registration), with classes on Tuesday and Friday evenings 6pm to 9pm. Those interested in learning to sail may register for as few or as many sessions as they wish, either consecutively or intermittently, as the two-week course structure is intended to accommodate busy summer schedules. Each course is a total of 12 hours. Because 24 hours of instruction is usually enough time to work through all content, two courses taken consecutively would be an ideal choice. Success in CANSail 1 and CANSail 2 depend on skills demonstrated during the program. Adult students may choose to work toward one or both levels. Please note that each course will run with as few as two registrants—if you sign up with a friend, you can be sure to be on the water for dates that are most convenient!
